New Compact and Budget-Friendly Electric SUV Revealed by Rivian

Rivian made a big splash this week with the unveiling of its new R2 mid-size SUV, set to hit the market in 2026 with a starting price of around ,000. The R2, about the size of a Toyota 4Runner, comes in at a lower price point than most versions of the popular gas-powered 4×4. Additionally, some models of the R2 will be faster than Rivian’s flagship R1T pickup and R1S SUV.

In a surprising move, Rivian also introduced two new models—the R3 and R3X. All three vehicles are constructed on a new mid-size platform and share two available battery packs, with the larger pack offering ranges exceeding 300 miles.

The R2 will be offered with a choice of battery packs and various motor configurations. The fastest version, with a tri-motor setup, can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds. The car will also feature all-wheel drive on dual and tri-motor models.

With 32-inch tires and a 115-inch wheelbase, the R2 boasts strong off-road capabilities similar to those of the Toyota 4Runner. The vehicle’s interior is spacious, offering room for car campers to sleep inside. Rivian plans to enhance self-driving capabilities in the R2 with 11 cameras, five radars, and advanced computing power.

The company also highlights the attractive design of the vehicles, particularly the eye-catching R3X. Rivian promises ample rear seat legroom, flat-folding rear seats for increased cargo space, and a front-trunk for extra storage. Customers can reserve an R2 with a 0 deposit, while production for the R3 and R3X will follow the SUV’s release.
