Jeep is considering offering a gasoline engine in its first electric vehicle (EV), the upcoming Jeep Recon off-road EV. CEO Antonio Filosa mentioned that the Recon may have a hybrid powertrain option alongside an electric one.
Expected to launch later this year, the Recon will be one of two Jeep EVs hitting the market. Initially labeled as 2024 models, it is likely that they will be part of the 2025 Jeep lineup due to the timing. The Recon follows the traditional Jeep design with an off-road focus, removable doors, short overhangs, and square proportions.
In contrast, the Jeep Wagoneer S will remain a battery electric vehicle (BEV) only, emphasizing Jeep’s commitment to their electrification strategy. Filosa hinted at potential opportunities for the Recon to explore hybrid options but deemed a gas-only version as unlikely.
The news regarding potential hybrid options comes at a time when EV sales have slowed in the U.S., prompting some automakers to revisit their transition plans. Although Filosa mentioned a hybrid powertrain, Jeep already offers a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option. PHEVs, unlike traditional hybrids, can run on electric power alone for a distance before engaging the gasoline engine and can be recharged by plugging into a power source.
Models like the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe already feature the PHEV powertrain. Utilizing the same system for the Recon would be a practical and cost-effective move for Jeep. The setup combines a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with electric motors to deliver 375 horsepower, providing the Wrangler with an electric range of approximately 21 miles and the Grand Cherokee with 25 miles.
