This Is the Zodiac Speaking, a psychological thriller, out now on Switch

This Is the Zodiac Speaking describes itself as a “noir, fact-based single-player psychological thriller,” and dangit, that is a really cool way to describe your video game. Even cooler, this title from developer Punch Punk Games and publisher Klabater is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC with a new launch trailer. In the game, you play as Bay Area journalist Robert, who survived an attack by the infamous Zodiac Killer and is now trying to catch the madman.

This Is the Zodiac Speaking introduces real-life crime scenes and clues to its fictional story, and it “uses low poly retro-’70s TV based on a symbolic approach of J.W. Goethe’s theory of how colors impact mood and perception.” You can’t say Punch Punk Games phoned in the visual aesthetic. Narrative-wise, the game has three endings based on the decisions you make in your investigation, so you’ll want to scrutinize each crime scene and connect the clues. You’ll also be engaging in psychological sessions to work through the trauma that came from almost being murdered.

It’s hard to craft a good mystery, but This Is the Zodiac Speaking sounds legitimately exciting and different, especially since it’s bolstered by real-life events. The Zodiac Killer is a morbidly fascinating topic in itself as well; my own favorite band from Japan has a side project band called Zodiac that is dedicated to writing songs about him.

In any case, let us know if you plan to give This Is the Zodiac Speaking a go on Nintendo Switch or any other platform.
