Industry Shorts: WTA, Mario Tennis, Sportradar


A number of WTA tennis stars are set to compete in a new Mario Tennis tournament, IMG has announced.

Eight of the agency’s top tennis clients, including Serena and Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka, Kei Nishikori and Maria Sharapova, compete with a celebrity doubles partner in the Mario Tennis Aces game on Nintendo Switch.

The “Stay at Home Slam” will take place on Sunday, 3rd May and will feature the likes of Gigi Hadid, Steve Aoki, and Seal alongside the athletes.

John McEnroe will commentate on the tournament alongside YouTube personality iJustine, while the tournament has been put together with input from various divisions across Endeavor, including IMG’s tennis clients, events and esports teams, WME’s talent clients and digital groups, as well as Endeavor Content’s Film 45, which will produce the tournament stream.

Sportradar has teamed up with PlaySight Interactive and Base Tennis Academy to launch the Tennis Point Exhibition Series.

The four day event will feature eight top men’s players from the ATP ranks and will be streamed live via Tennis Channel’s new Tennis Channel International, which utilises Sportradar’s OTT platform and was launched this week. 

Weetabix Protein and Virgin Sport are encouraging children across the country to get active as part of the ASICS London 10K.

The event, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday 5th July 2020, has been called off due to the coronavirus pandemic and was due to see thousands of children finish the final kilometre of their “Weetabix Protein Youth Challenge” in Central London. 

Instead, the pair are inviting families to take part virtually, asking children aged 16 and under from across the country to run their own 10km race by completing a recommended minimum of 1 kilometre per week across a 10-week period, starting from 25th May. 

The UEFA Foundation For Children has launched a new ‘Champions Teachers’ product, which features e-learning exercises parents can do with their children during the coronavirus pandemic.

Featuring stars like Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon, Wales manager Ryan Giggs, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Laura Benkarth, and former France star Christian Karembeu, the series will involve the players putting their own personal takes on school exercises like dictation. 
The exercise is designed for 6 to 12 year-olds, with lessons available in English, French, German or Italian.

Dugout has entered into a strategic content partnership with Sports Illustrated publisher Maven in the US and Canada.
The partnership is Dugout’s first entry into the US market and the organisations say the partnership will strengthen Sports Illustrated football coverage, which previously focused on ‘text-based content’.
