Netflix will make an appearance at E3 2019, the gaming conference that will take place in Los Angeles from 11-14 June. This should serve as a fairly sizeable indicator of how seriously the streaming service is taking its slate of upcoming gaming content.
So far, Netflix’s video game output has mainly focused on the Stranger Things franchise. For instance, we recently saw an adorable trailer for Stranger Things 3: The Game, which will launch on Nintendo Switch on 4 July to tie in with the release of the show’s third season.
This collaboration between Netflix and E3 was announced on Twitter, with a totally-not-forced exchange taking place between an official Netflix Twitter account and an official E3 Twitter account. The main takeaway from the conversation is that Netflix “have some gaming news in the works we can talk about” at E3.
This news will be announced during a panel, which has the formal-sounding title, ‘Bringing Your Favorite Shows to Life: Developing Netflix Originals into Video Games’. As for what this presentation will entail, Netflix’s Twitter account says, “Of course there’s the upcoming @Stranger_Things game but hmmmmm… there’s definitely more to come!”
What will this “more to come” turn out to be? For now, all we have is guesswork, so let’s have a crack at that. Could Netflix announce its intention to make more user-controlled stories like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch? Or might there more tie-in games to come, expanding out from the Stranger Things brand to take in some other heavy-hitters from the streaming service’s library?
Of course, we’ll just have to wait and see to find out what kind of gaming content Netflix is cooking up. The Umbrella Academy jumps to mind as a Netflix property that could make for a great game, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking on our part. Whatever they end up announcing, we’ll be sure to let you know.
