Super Smash Bros. crashes the top 10 with a new game release, but Fortnite remains strong despite esports events for League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Dota 2.
Smash Bros. Sees Super Results for Game Launch
The highly-anticipated release of Nintendo’s latest Super Smash Bros. game for the Switch over the weekend catapulted the title into the top 10. Despite releasing on Dec. 7, the title pulled 6.71M hours watched and found itself nicely nestled in the middle of this week’s chart.
However, the hours watched on Dec. 8-9 declined sharply following the Friday release that garnered 2.98M. Though it wouldn’t be surprising for Super Smash Bros. to stay in the top 10 this coming week, a decline would follow the recent trend of fall game releases that have touched the top 10. While games like Fallout 76 and Pokemon: Let’s Go have managed to turn their launch into strong Twitch numbers in the short term, none have seen extended success.
The newest of those titles, Pokemon: Let’s Go, just fell out of the top 10 after experiencing a slide in viewership in the past week despite strong numbers upon its release.
Fortnite In-Game Content Drops Cause Viewership Spike
Though numerous high-profile Fortnite streamers like Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Timothy “TimTheTatman” Betar saw decreased airtime this week because attendance at the Gamers’ Choice Award show in Las Vegas, Fortnite still managed to pull more hours watched this week than last week. Despite a break in Winter Royale competition, the title improved its viewership by nearly 2M total hours watched week-over-week with the beginning of the latest in-game “season.”
In Fortnite, players are given an opportunity to level up during a “season” as a way to unlock in-game skins, emotes, and other content. Additionally, Epic Games has made it a point to make a few notable, significant changes in gameplay and/or the game’s map from season-to-season that give the game a fresh feel to it. With a festive beginning to Season 7 on Dec. 6, content creators and Fortnite enthusiasts sprinted to Twitch. Not only did Fortnite experience a jump in hours watched on Thursday Dec. 6, but it also saw a notable increase in unique channels for the day.
Path of Exile Expansion Stimulates Game’s Audience
Free-to-play role play game Path of Exile typically doesn’t make appearances in the top 10 content chart, but this weekend’s Path of Exile: Betrayal expansion launch helped the title see some of its strongest viewership this year.
Saturday’s 1.31M hours watched represents the most for the title this year. Path of Exile also experienced it’s highest amount of airtime of the year with 3.77K. The highest airtime for the title in a day prior to this weekend was 2.53K on June 2. That day was also the title’s most-watched of the year with 1.01M.
