President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has been visiting development studios around the world recently – and it appears his latest leg has been at Finnish studio, Housemarque.
If you’re interested as to why this might be important, Housemarque is known for creating Resogun – a stellar PS4 launch title that cemented the developer as one of the best arcade-game makers still operating.
A little while back, the studio made a disheartening statement that arcade games were “dead”, and announced it would be moving into more lucrative areas of gaming.
The company followed that announcement by saying it’s working on a triple-A game… although there’s literally no more information available about what that is.
Seems like quite a strange and cryptic thing to announce. And then, as we say, Yoshida recently rocked up for a visit.
So what could Shuhei Yoshida of all people be doing there? Delivering PS5 development consoles? Talking about upcoming projects.
Well – get your speculation seatbelts on, we’re going into warpdrive with this one.
Sony XDev Europe, a support team within Worldwide Studios, retweeted Shu’s post from 23 May with a couple of emojis attached (see above).
This more or less confirms, in our eyes, there’s some sort of collaborative effort between Sony and Housemarque once again. The studio’s last game came to PC, leaving many thinking that the studio’s relationship with Sony could be over.
These new tweets suggest this certainly isn’t the case.
As for what the team could be working on, it’s anybody’s guess.
We’re certainly looking forward to what comes next – Housemarque is a very talented studio, and if it has what could be a PlayStation 5 launch title in the oven, we’re keen to get ourselves a glimpse as soon as possible.
