Earlier this month we got to see our first official look at the next FromSoftware game, Elden Ring. While it had leaked ahead of time, it was still great to see the trailer, and the hype remains at a dangerous level. If you aren’t familiar with the background of this game, let me fill you in.
This is a game from the creators of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, but they are collaborating with the man behind the Game of Thrones TV series, George R R Martin. He wrote the books that the show was based on, and instead of finishing the storylines he’s created inside of these books, he decided to help FromSoftware out with a game.
Needless to say, this is a very big deal and a very strange one too. It’s unusual to see this kind of thing in gaming, but the result should be incredibly interesting. Apparently, George R R Martin helped with the world design and some of the writing, which could mean a level of storytelling that we’ve never seen before in a FromSoftware game.
While the trailer we were shown at E3 didn’t give much away at all, there are a few tasty tidbits floating around the internet that are worth paying attention to, especially given the leaks beforehand.
Elden Ring Release Date
We know that Elden Ring is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but we don’t know when.
FromSoftware tends to release games fairly often though and according to this interview with Xbox Wire, it has been in the works for a while.
It’s not unfeasible that we get to see this at some point next year. This is especially true as it has yet to be announced for the next generation of consoles which should be starting near the end of 2020.
Elden Ring Gameplay
As is the way with FromSoftware games, this is going to be an action RPG. However, according to the interview with Xbox Wire, it will focus more on the RPG elements than Dark Souls.
Given how much customisation is available in each of the Dark Souls games, that could mean an awful lot of variety when it comes to playstyles. This is the polar opposite of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which more or less demanded you play the game how it wanted to be played.
Elden Ring Size
That’s a weird subheading, am I going to marry someone called Elden? Probably not.
In an interview with IGN, Miyazaki said: “It is without a doubt our biggest title yet in terms of sheer volume”.
This is pretty astounding given the size of some of the games they’ve made, but it is also meant to be the most open-world of their games, which isn’t too hard to imagine as previous FromSoftware games have all had multiple paths, but lack the freedom of a true open-world.
Elden Ring Story
The leak prior to E3 mentioned a Norse setting where you used a horse to get around a huge open-world and took down different lords who controlled various territories. We have no confirmation about that, although the female character in the trailer could well be a Valkyrie shepherding the dead to Valhalla.
What we do know is from the Xbox Wire interview about the concepts of the game. Miyazaki said: “The Elden Ring is the name given to a mysterious concept that defines the world itself” which is about as vague as it gets. He then went on to say: “This Elden Ring has been shattered. The significance of this will be one of the important themes of the game.”
Which still doesn’t clear much up, but then what were you expecting, it’s a FromSoftware game.
