UnMetal is a comedic Metal Gear clone headed to Switch this month

Publisher Versus Evil and developer Unepic_Fran will bring 2D stealth action game UnMetal to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC with a release date of September 28, 2021. UnMetal is an extremely blatant Metal Gear clone, even down to the graphical style, but its release date trailer does seem to tease a few twists with its gameplay mechanics. (You might dress up as a giant piece of cheese? Maybe?) The premise is that protagonist Jesse Fox has been imprisoned in a secret military base for a crime he didn’t commit, and now he needs to sneak, shoot, and improvise his way to freedom.

The UnMetal trailer paints the game essentially as a giant parody of Metal Gear and old-school action movies in general. Some people might find that amusing, but often, treating a project like “parody” becomes a license to do nothing clever or funny with a story. I am honestly intensely unenthusiastic about the game’s narrative. However, if it’s borrowing the right aspects of Metal Gear and tossing in some new ideas of its own, UnMetal could still be a quite fun game to play on Switch. It already has a demo on Steam, if you would like to investigate that for yourself.

With no actual Metal Gear to enjoy on Nintendo Switch, UnMetal might be the next best thing later this September.
