Metroid Dread Report blog brings regular updates, more plot revealed

It’s a great day to be a Metroid fan! Nintendo and MercurySteam just unveiled the first all-new 2D Metroid in almost two decades, and the story picks up where Metroid: Fusion left off. Following the tense reveal trailer, Nintendo Treehouse showed off new gameplay and revealed plot details. If you’re still craving more juicy details, we’ve got them! Nintendo has just launched an official website for the game, complete with the Metroid Dread Report.

Metroid Dread Report #1

Metroid Dread Report is a new blog that will introduce the newest information on the upcoming game and the world of the Metroid series, along with behind-the-scenes glimpses from the game’s development team. The inaugural issue gives us new details about the E.M.M.I. bots, the meaning of dread, and the game’s plot. It also features a message from Samus herself, recapping the events of Fusion and how they connect to Dread.

The new Metroid Dread Report has revealed that E.M.M.I. stands for “Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifiers.” These machines are made out of “the strongest stuff in the universe” and are programmed to extract DNA from unknown creatures. When X parasites were rumored to be alive on planet ZRD, seven E.M.M.I. robots are sent to investigate, but they vanished. Samus is immune to X parasites, so it’s up to her to find out what went wrong.

The E.M.M.I. bots will relentlessly pursue Samus, which is a big part of the game’s theme of dread.

You could say the E.M.M.I. are a representation of the concept of a terrifying threat that we’ve spent so long considering. Since these are robots, they have no feelings or hesitation. They come straight after their target and ruthlessly kill in one stab. Samus must accomplish her mission while contending with these cold, calculating, and extremely strong enemies.

Metroid Dread aims to combine the franchise’s overall focus on exploration with “the concept of a looming, terrifying threat.” The E.M.M.I. robots are a big part of that, but the Metroid Dread Report also teases other threats that we’ll see at a later date.
