Publisher and developer X Plus and co-developer Sonzai Games have announced 8-bit platformer adventure Bat Boy for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam for release in 2022, and there is a gameplay trailer to go with it. The game has a fantastic Saturday cartoon-like premise that agrees well with the old-school visual style:
Interdimensional mage Lord Vicious has brainwashed Bat Boy’s fellow teammates in order to participate in the Trials of Darkness, a heinously brutal series of athletic events! It’s up to Bat Boy to team up with one-time villain and mouthy crow Garou, traversing all manner of hostile worlds, to free the minds of his sports-hero teammates before they fall victim to the Trials. Along the way, Bat Boy will encounter all manner of characters, some allies, most not, as he fights his way to the final confrontation with Lord Vicious.
As you defeat and fix your brainwashed friends, you will take on their powers to help you continue your fight. As one would expect from an adventure platformer game, Bat Boy will have various collectibles, secrets, and unlockable music to find in your travels through different environments. Evader Music, who composed for another X Plus title, Mega Man X-meets-ActRaiser game Smelter, is providing the music for Bat Boy as well. However, what most sticks out to me about the Bat Boy gameplay trailer is just how fluid the animations are. Just because it’s 8-bit doesn’t mean it can’t be silky smooth.
What do you think of Bat Boy? Frankly, I’m pretty intrigued across the board so far. The best-case scenario is that we may have another Shovel Knight on our hands.
