Remember Darwin Project? Probably not, and for a variety of reasons, that’s pretty sad. Not sad as in “it was such a huge hit, how could you not remember it?” but sad as in Darwin Project was such a unique diamond in the rough in the tsunami of battle royales that oversaturated gaming in 2018.

Of course, it is only available on PC and Xbox as an early access title, but that is until January 2020 when Darwin Project will release on PS4. Not only will it release on PS4, but the full game will be released as well, bringing Darwin Project out of its early access stages.

Almost two years ago, Darwin Project released on PC and Xbox, on January 18, 2018, as a free-to-play battle royale experience. Much like any other battle royale, your objective is to be the last to survive, but each round only has ten combatants, but players will not only be fighting each other but viewers as well.

What makes Darwin Project so unique is two roles that it integrates into the gameplay outside of the ten players fighting to the death. Players can choose to be a spectator and impact the match in several different ways. They can vote on which powers will be released on the arena, place bets on players, and invade matches. This takes the interactivity between streamers and viewers to a whole new level.

There is also the role of the Show Director. The Show Director bridges the gap between spectator and player. They control the arena shifting the tide of the game and granting the spectators commands. And most importantly, they use their voice commentate the entire battle.

Darwin Project

Darwin Project prides itself on being a half survival half battle royale experience. Players must gear up to survive the cold while also fighting for their lives. Track enemies, hunt wildlife, kill your foes, and hope that the spectators are in your favor.

Another thing that sets the Darwin Project apart from many other battle royales is the story it tells. Most battle royales toss you into an arena with no reason for being there. However, the Darwin Project takes place in a dystopian mountainside in the Northern Canadia Rockies. Players take control of inmates that are being used as a science experiment to prepare for the impending ice age, while also being used as entertainment for viewers. What this science project hopes to accomplish, I have no idea, but I can tell you it is a whole lot of fun to watch.

On top of the announcement that Darwin Project would be coming to PS4 in January, Scavengers Studio released a new cinematic trailer showcasing new gear that will be available when the full game launches and shows how the spectator and show director roles work.

So, if you are as excited as I am to hop in and direct a bloodbath with all of my friends on PS4, make sure to mark your calendars for the full release of Darwin Project in January 2020.
