Microsoft has revealed that the name for its next-generation game console is simpler than originally believed. It turns out the name of Microsoft’s next-gen line will just be “Xbox” and the Series X name is for a specific model of consoles. The news comes from Business Insider who confirmed with a Microsoft representative that the Xbox Series X name revealed at The Game Awards applies only to that specific version of the console.

“The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox,” the Microsoft representative said. “And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.”
Microsoft also confirmed that this naming convention will allow for different naming variations within the next-gen lineup. “Similar to what fans have seen with previous generations, the name ‘Xbox Series X’ allows room for additional consoles in the future.”
Currently, there are several consoles under the Xbox One banner. There is Microsoft’s most-powerful console the Xbox One X, along with slimmer, less powerful variants like the Xbox One S and the Xbox One S All Digital.Similarly, the Xbox name for Microsoft’s next-gen consoles could open the door for machines like the Xbox Series S, for example. It would also lend some credence to reports that Microsoft is working on a family of next-gen devices, including a next-gen Xbox that might be all digital.
